The decision to stay when you know you shouldn't

Criminals is a mid-tempo indie folk track at 96 BPM, built around steady acoustic rhythm, layered harmonies and restrained percussion. With a clear Western undercurrent in tone and rhythm, the song carries a restless, slightly outlawed energy.

The dual vocal format creates a constant push and pull between perspectives. There is no clear hero and no neat resolution. Instead, the track leans into the decision to continue rather than to step away.

Lyrically, it explores the pull of returning to something you know may not be good for you.

"It conjures how it feels to be caught up in something and, rather than choosing to break it, getting swept up in it." — Molly Bobroff

Produced by Tom Philpott, Criminals blends indie folk structure with Americana texture, keeping space at the centre of the production. It follows Kiss Me Slowly and Céilí — two earlier singles that established MOMA's dual vocal approach and built a growing audience across streaming platforms.

MOMA – Molly Bobroff and Matthew Day

Molly Bobroff & Matthew Day

MOMA is Molly Bobroff and Matthew Day — two voices, one band, built entirely around the tension between them. Their songs don't resolve neatly. They sit in the uncomfortable middle ground between knowing something isn't right and choosing to stay anyway.

Molly's voice carries hope in places it has no business being. Matt's is quieter, rougher — the sound of someone who's thought about something too long and said it anyway. Together they don't harmonise so much as argue in the same key. It works because it's honest.

The music isn't chasing anything. No trends, no polish for its own sake. Rooted in indie folk with a Western undercurrent, it sounds like it was written somewhere between London and York at an unreasonable hour — which, largely, it was.

Criminals is their third single. Produced by Tom Philpott. Out 13 March 2026.
